Texas houses four different known species of fire ants — three are native to the state, and the other was imported into North America in the early 1900’s. They are all about a fourth of an inch long, reddish-brown in color, and carry a nasty stinger (along with a powerful bite). Unlike other ants that bite to make a wound and spray acid on it to cause a burning sensation, fire ants bite only to grip and secure their victim while they use an abdominal stinger to inject a toxic venom called “solenopsin”. Not only are these pests a danger to humans, but they can also ruin landscaping, interfere with electrical systems and other appliances, and trigger allergic reactions in some people and pets.
